Ai Shiang,
What you said is very true... Fredericton is basically a university town with 50,000 population. I was glad to study in this small town with relatively low living cost compared to other big cities in Canada.
Poor students in Sydney... Hopefully they'll graduate soon, find a job and a better place to live in :)

Oh! I forgot to mention. I should have put in as, those students should go to universities not situated in city like Sydney. There are so many universities in Australia. Some are located like 1,000 km away, but they're right in the town of its own. Students will only have to walk to classes. Some town are like only few kilometres x kilometres.

I was in small town when I was in Uni. The rent was on $60/week including everything except food. The town has only about 100,000 population. almost like a university town.

Having said that, I guess everyone wanted a degree from well known universities and so they squeeze in the city like here. Sometime I also "kasihan" these students as I see they even have to rent out the living room. I sure hope not the balcony!

Ai Shiang,
Rent is expensive in Sydney! The $675 rent I mentioned, referred to monthly rent. Monthly rent for apartments around 520 sq ft. in Fredericton would be between $700 and $1,000 or more, depending on location, whether it's furnished/unfurnished, with or without utilities.
I think the trouble of students living too far away from campus is that they'll have to either spend hours on public transit in a big city, or own their own vehicles.

Usually when demand is high or exceed supply, rent goes up.

It's expensive in Sydney too. 52m2 (or 520 sq ft) is rented for $2100 per month. Is that cheap or expensive? Is the $675 you mention per week or month?

Usually, I see students have to share with others just so they can afford to live in Sydney. I reckon students should just go to rural area where rent is just merely $100/week. Compare to here at $470 to $500 per week depending on how close you're to the city.
